CONSIDERING CAM THERAPIES Cancer patients using or considering CAM therapy should discuss this decision with their doctor or nurse, as they would any therapeutic approach. Some CAM therapies may interfere with standard treatment or may be harmful when used with conventional treatment. A frank, in-depth conversation with your doctor can open the doors to beneficial CAM therapies that can aid in the successful treatment of cancer and other life threatening disease.

Shouldn't Everyone Have Options? Conventional Medicine is Not the Only Option for Cancer Treatment When most people think about cancer treatment, a wide range of medical procedures come to mind. Chemotherapy, Radiation Therapy, Hormone or Immunotherapies... even surgery and stem cell transplantation. Often, the patient dealing with cancer has several options presented that can lead to successful outcomes, yet positive outcomes still remain a distant hope for many who face the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. Even when positive outcomes are likely, the side effects of Conventional Medicine are often the most difficult aspects of cancer treatment. As an adjunct, Complementary and Alternative Medicine can provide the cancer patient with options that support successful cancer recovery and have been proven to reduce harmful or intolerable side effects while increasing positive outcomes and survival rates. Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cancer Treatment What is Complementary and Alternative Medicine? Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a group of different medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine – although an increasing number of Medical Doctors are combining CAM with conventional treatment with great success. Complementary Medicine is used together with Conventional Medicine. Alternative Medicine is used in place of Conventional Medicine. Conventional Medicine is medicine that is practiced by holders of M.D. (medical doctor) or D.O. (doctor of osteopathy) degrees and by health professionals who work with them, including physical therapists, psychologists, and registered nurses. The National Cancer Institute acknowledges the efficacy of CAM and defines its use alongside Conventional Medicine as Integrative Medicine. Are Complementary and Alternative therapies widely used? Yes. In fact, a 2007 National Health Interview Survey concluded that approximately 40% of adult patients used CAM therapy in the previous 12 months. The most common treatments were the use of naturopathic and homeopathic products and physical therapies such as deep breathing exercises and yoga. In addition, another large survey of cancer survivors reported that 40-61% of patients utilized a wide variety of CAM therapies to augment their treatment including spiritual practice, relaxation therapies, nutritional supplements and vitamins. |
